Elizabeth Leopold, a young woman from an upper-class family, finds Nelson Rodker, the intelligent and obedient son of family friends, annoying. She and her best friend, Holly, prefer Nelson’s rebellious older brother, James, who is frequently in trouble. As children, they mock Nelson’s intelligence and admire James’s bad-boy persona.
As they grow older, Elizabeth secretly dates Roy Howard, a counterculture journalist, to rebel against her parents' expectations. Meanwhile, Nelson returns from the Peace Corps and begins practicing law. His parents intensify their efforts to match him with Elizabeth. Despite her reluctance, Elizabeth agrees to a fake romance with Nelson to appease their families. During this time, she begins to appreciate Nelson as a friend. She realizes he is thoughtful and kind, qualities she previously overlooked.
Elizabeth’s relationship with Roy deteriorates. After a painful breakup, she becomes closer to Nelson. When Holly expresses interest in Nelson, Elizabeth becomes jealous and confronts him. Nelson reassures her, confessing his love. This causes Elizabeth to confront her feelings. She realizes that Nelson is the steady partner she truly needs, while she had been drawn to James's rebelliousness out of defiance.
After a series of misunderstandings and rumors, Nelson defends Elizabeth at a New Year's Eve party. They finally admit their love for each other and share a kiss as the new year begins. CF-501 Falcon (talk · contribs) 02:09, 26 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
