Removal of biographical information
editSignificant sections of Amarnath Vidyalankar's biography, specifically having to do with his imprisonment and education have been removed from this page entirely. I am hoping that someone with more authority than I have will restore the sections of Amarnath Vidyalankar's biography.
I have made the following updates to this page:
1. Removed "On 23rd July 1975, he voted in support of the proclamation of emergency in India."
This line is counterfactual to the source, it appears the line was inserted for political reasons. The specific resolution on which Amarnath Vidyalankar voted YES is not strictly speaking the declaration of national emergency but its application to the State of Jammu & Kashmir. The citation itself refutes the line (https://eparlib.nic.in/bitstream/123456789/1130/1/lsd_05_14_23-07-1975.pdf).
2. Added "When Lala Lajpat Rai founded the Servants of the People Society, Vidyalankar became lifetime member. Lala Lajpat Rai gave Vidyalankar the job of teaching history at Lahore National College, where Bhagat Singh and his associates were his students. After the closure of National College, Lala Lajpat Rai sent him to Hisar to assist famine victims in remote areas. In 1931 Amarnath Vidyalankar was sentenced to two years in jail for his editorial on the failure of the Round Table Conferences. He was also imprisoned for 2 years during Quit India movement. During the communal clashes in 1947, he organized rescue squads for people." (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OtyliMKbHM)
3. Removed "Winning the seat by a large margin, Vidyalankar resigned as AICC permanent secretary." due to lack of citation.
4. Removed "In 1977, he decided not to continue in the legislature. Vidyalankar was active in the Indian National Congress until his death in 1985." due to lack of citation.
I believe with these edits, all of the flagged issues pertaining to this page have been remedied, and as such, the warning label at the top of this page should be removed. Yamazaki442 (talk) 19:09, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
- 1- Please be more specific by offering quotations from the document.
- 2- youtube videos can't be added as source
- 3 & 4 - These are not contentious, it can be verified through records therefor citation needed temp is used. I'll add it later. Mixmon (talk) 19:54, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
- 1. I would like to be able to remove the following line: "On 23rd July 1975, he voted in support of the proclamation of emergency in India." Because it is counterfactual and appears to have been inserted political reasons. The specific resolution which Amarnath Vidyalankar voted YES is not strictly speaking the declaration of national emergency but its application to the State of Jammu & Kashmir. Note the questions called from the document: "That this House approves the Proclamation of Emergency made by the President on the 25th June, 1975, under clause ( 1 ) of Article 352 of the Constitution as also the Order of the President dated 29th June 1975, made in exercise of powers conferred by sub-clause (b) of clause (4) of Article 352 of the Constitution, as applied to the State of Jammu and Kashmir, applying the said Proclamation to the State of Jammu and Kashmir." This is not the vote on authorization of the Emergency, rather it is the vote on whether or not Indira Gandhi has the power under the Indian constitution to apply the order to Jammu and Kashmir. - 2. In regards to removing the biographical information which is backed up by the All India Radio's official archive on the grounds that it isn't a credible source because it is a YouTube link, All India Radio uses YouTube as its archive. Their website is here: https://prasarbharati.gov.in/homepage-air/ and when one clicks down to their Archive it takes you directly to their YouTube. AIR is using YouTube as its primary archive where this specific news piece is housed, and thus, needs to be allowed in this case as a credible citation, because it is where AIR houses their distributed works. I realize that this is an issue, however can we take this up with someone higher up? In instances where news organizations, or in this case, state sponsored media organizations use YouTube as an archive, shouldn't these be considered credible sources? I realize that generally speaking YouTube is a dubious source at best, but for instances where credible organizations use YouTube to house their archives, those YouTube archives should be allowable sources. How can we further a conversation about this?
- RE 3 & 4, thank you for taking care of the proper citations there. I have been trying to find corroborative sources but was unable to.
- I would very much like to see the counterfactual line removed, and the biographical information pertaining to Amarnath Vidyalankar's imprisonment put back in. Yamazaki442 (talk) 22:52, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
- 1. It has 2 parts to it. The document quotes presidential order of 25th June 1975 (which applied emergency to India) and 29th June 1975 (which extended it to J&K). Both of these documents can be accessed here (on page 11 & 47).
- 2- Sorry but wikipedia only accepts written text as sources not videos (when the reliablilty of All India Radio source is never discussed here)- If you are not satisfied by this answer, you can raise the issue of reliablity of youtube in this case at WP:RSN. Mixmon (talk) 07:03, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
- Imprisonment detail is there in Writing section but lacking in citation,. Mixmon (talk) 07:09, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Yamazaki442 I raised a query regarding youtube as source - Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard#Youtube as source Mixmon (talk) 07:16, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
- I have reinstated your edits after an exception for using youtube in this particular case was made at WP:RSN. Mixmon (talk) 10:54, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Mixmon Thank you so much for raising the query and getting the issue with AIR's YouTube archive resolved. I very much value your openness and collaboration in regards to these issues. This interaction regarding this dispute has absolutely made the Wikipedia experience better. With the biographical information restored and with the AIR source allowed this page now contains factual information about the Emergency that is also critical so this page is truly neutral and encyclopedic. So, THANK YOU, once again. I have boldy removed the tags at the top of the article, now that these issues appear to be resolved. I hope I am not over stepping my bounds here. Yamazaki442 (talk) 17:36, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
- The issues mentioned in the tags are still not resolved- 1) I have not added anything new, just trimmed down the excessive information which lacked citation (structure is same) 2) Whatever sources are there in the article are from Indian govt data, we need some independent sources. 3) The article still lacks citations, as you can see I have added inline citation needed or additional citation(s) needed templates too. Mixmon (talk) 17:46, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
- I see. My apologies. And thank you, once again. Yamazaki442 (talk) 18:00, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
- I have gone through and added another citation from a recent article from another credible publication. I am working on finding citations for the remaining four items. I do think though that the flags for Fan POV, Quality Standards, and Encyclopedic Tone should be removed. But I will not do so without approval. Thanks again for your collaboration and help. - After recent edits, all of the information is clearly referenced and tone is unbiased and factual. Thank you to all who contributed to making the page better. However, I do not believe that the tag indicating its written from a "fan point of view" is valid anymore. I have taken the liberty of removing it. Will request a senior editor weigh in if they disagree. — Preceding [[Wikipedia:Signatures|Vshaiva (talk) 23:20, 2 April 2023 (UTC)]] comment added by Vshaiva (talk • contribs) 23:17, 2 April 2023 (UTC)
