Portal talk:Television/Archive 1

Hi, I'm looking for some advice about links and embeds. I see there are regular IMDB and TV.com links in the TV and film pages. I'm from the team developing the new film and TV search site LocateTV, which allows you to search for when a programme, film or actor is next on TV, online or on DVD, specific to your region. We also have embeds for bloggers to put straight on their pages linking readers to the content. I thought this could be a great addition to the Wiki pages but I understand there is a very unbranded / democratic feel to Wiki. Can anyone advise me if, considering other sites are routinely linked to, it would be possible to put these embeds up or just links? We don't want to tread on any toes!

Fair use images

I don't think Fair use images can be used on a page like this. They need to be used for critical commentary in an article etc. So they should probably go.--Commander Keane 09:11, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

I'm currently asking around about this. Because some Wikiportals have them while others don't. Jedi6-(need help?) 15:16, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
As far as I can tell we can use fair use images for the same reason the main Wikipedia page can. Jedi6-(need help?) 23:41, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

Selected article

I understand that Lost is popular, but shouldn't we start with Featured TV articles before we start selecting random ones? Staxringold 21:42, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

What is up right now is just temporary until the portal is finished. I'll probably change it tonight. Jedi6-(need help?) 21:45, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

Bad colours

Hi! Sorry to say, but the colors are bad - on the dark background, the letters don't stand out. This, is, by the way, a typical error made by people using LCD monitors, where contrast is much better than on CRT, and letters more legible than the same content on a CRT (funny that this problem is related to television itself :) ). Well, please tune on the colours. I have no problem with the type of the colour itself, only their darkness! THX in advance in the name of all of us not having eagle-like eyes and using CRT monitors! Msoos 11:37, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

They look fine to me and I use a CRT. Jedi6-(need help?) 04:52, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
I 2nd this. Don't forget about readability for the Visually Disabled either. If you are colorblind this green on blue can be terrible to read I imagine The DJ 02:42, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
Sadly we can't help everyone since their is several types of colorblindness so unless we use only black and white someone is going to have trouble. Jedi6-(need help?) 02:50, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
That's no a reason to not take some basic rules into consideration. And one of those is "Use contrasting colors". We are the only portal i EVER visited that doesn't use "black on light colored background". C'Mon we have to be able to find something that's better suited then this???? This can't be the last available color scheme for a Portal. The DJ 03:09, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
Oh I wasn't suggesting we don't change it only that we can't please everyone. Go ahead and be bold and change the colors. Azatoth choose these colors because my original chose was horrid. Jedi6-(need help?) 03:14, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
I think this is a lot better, though perhaps i should inverse the page background with the boxed background. Cause now links are a bit too unclear i think... Also i think we should take a bit of formatting from the Portal:Film. I'm going to bed now, I'll see in the morning. The DJ 03:41, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

tv shows

Is there a tv show project? I think scheduling of TV shows should be in a lower section instead of the first paragraph. TV shows go into syndication and get sold on DVD and cell phones. They also get sold in other countries. The scheduling does not tell me anything about the show. --Gbleem 19:45, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Top article for TV portal

Hi, just come to this page so forgive me if I speak out of turn...

It's great to have a portal about TV shows (that's my interest) but I was surprised to see the 'top' article on the portal was about the history of TV, which (I'm guessing) is not otherwise the topic of the portal (or do I have the wrong idea?)

Having said that, not sure what would make a more appropriate one.. needs to be 'tv show overview' without focusing on any one show I guess...

BTW shouldn't the 'Selected picture' box have a picture in? --Mortice 22:36, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

You are absolutely right about the picture. --thedemonhog talkedits 04:25, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

Perhaps I misunderstand, but

discussion of particular television shows under a heading of "television" makes about as much sense to me as trying to lump discussions of particular novels under the the heading, "books." I mean, I can see including some kind of section or set of links, but . . . surely it would make more sense to focus on television itself rather than particular shows in that medium?

Speaking of which, I was rather shocked to find no mention of Marshall McLuhan . . . I'm not expert enough to add this kind of information myself, but I hope someone will . . .

Thanks to everyone working on this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Auralee (talkcontribs) 02:15, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

Note going forward

In the midst of restructuring the Portal, going forward towards WP:FPORTC at some point soon. There are still some more structural changes to be made, and then I'll go ahead and flesh out the individual sections with more entries. The main thing is that there should be enough material in WP:TV project to only use WP:FA quality material in the Article and Biography sections at the top. Cirt (talk) 09:04, 29 December 2007 (UTC).

To do

Did you know

I've gone back through the archives, back to Wikipedia:Recent additions 141 for entries for the Did you know section, but haven't yet gone further back than that. Cirt (talk) 11:09, 29 December 2007 (UTC).

Articles and Bios

There is plenty of available content to use, therefore I specified in the instructions on the subpages that all content in the Articles and Biographies sections must be of Featured Quality Status content. Cirt (talk) 12:06, 29 December 2007 (UTC).

Portal peer review

Looking for quote from Arthur Hailey's "Wheels," 1978 TV mini series...

Actor Rock Hudson, playing character Adam Trenton, is asked to be logical and replies something like: "There's nothing logical about a 115-pound blond spending $2's worth of gas to drive a two-ton automobile 15 (?) miles to save 5 cents on a can of peas..." or something along those lines. Would appreciate the exact quote or suggestions where to ask. Thank you, Shir-El too 17:20, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Probably a better place to ask would be the talk page for WP:TV. Cirt (talk) 17:36, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Thank you, will do so. Shir-El too 17:30, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

oK call me slow, but I got a tag for this page on "The Partridge Family" article page, but beyond that I have no clue how I am supposed to use this page, or why we were invited. Anybody? ShirleyPartridge (talk) 04:31, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

You may want to read about Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals and Wikipedia:Portal. Cirt (talk) 05:05, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
oK then, so if I want to solicit the help of other editors to come to Our page and lend a hand, this is where I do it? ShirleyPartridge (talk) 05:31, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
Ah, no, that would be the talk page for WP:TV. Cirt (talk) 05:33, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

I have a question.

In terms of animation on TV, why is Ren & Stimpy considered mid-importance and Spongebob Squarepants high-importance? I won't doubt Spongebob is more visible to the public eye, especially now, but Ren & Stimpy was the most important and defining animated show on cable up to that time. Even if it isn't as big a cultural monument, it was at least as important as Beavis & Butthead to the development of it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.252.24.25 (talk) 16:01, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

That is a question better posed to the talk page of WP:TV. This is a talk page about the portal, not the WikiProject rating system. Cirt (talk) 20:06, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

I don't see the featured portal star in any different languages. User:Es.ntp> 118.68.238.6 (talk) 15:54, 14 February 2009 (UTC).

Yes it has to be added for each project individually. Cirt (talk) 08:09, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

Timeline of the introduction of television in countries

This interesting list suffers from a lack of references and many, many mistakes. The list requires a completely new research of the dates. I have collected some sources which may the useful: At first, The Statesman's Yearbook and the Europa World Year Book, very reputable almanacs, also TIME Almanac with Information Please and World Almanac may be useful. Unfortunately I do not have an own access to the online archives, so I cannot do that work. pressreference.com, culturalprofiles.net or [mapsofworld.com] (blocked by spamfilter) are much less reputable and should be used only if no other sources are available. Then, there are several "historical dictionaries", available also for minor countries in asia and africa, and the Country Studies(Area Handbooks. Perhaps the is someone here who wants to improve that list.--Antemister (talk) 22:20, 25 December 2011 (UTC)

Best to discuss this at talk page of WP:TELEVISION, not here. This talk page is for discussion of this portal, itself. — Cirt (talk) 15:54, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

tv.com model = problem

there is a problem with the tv.com model

example: episode Human Error (Star Trek: Voyager) : the tv.com model {{tv.com episode|star-trek-voyager/human-error-26478|Human Error}} = {{tv.com episode|star-trek-voyager/human-error-26478|Human Error}} : it opens an error page

the correct link is http://www.tv.com/shows/star-trek-voyager/human-error-26478/ where the code 26478 is the one used in the model though

the same for Q2 (Star Trek: Voyager) but for Kids (House) too

i don't know how to fix this 89.217.52.123 (talk) 14:43, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

There seems to be a discussion on this at Template talk:Tv.com. -- John of Reading (talk) 15:54, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Current Status for Television Shows

Frequently, visitors use Wikipedia to determine the most-current status of a Television show, eg. Cancelled, Season 3 under production, Season 2 begins airing September 1st etc.

It seems to me this would be a valuable section to include as a callout detail, rather than having to dig for the data. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.91.20.118 (talk) 07:15, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

This would be an interesting suggestion for discussion at WT:TELEVISION. — Cirt (talk) 14:14, 1 August 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice, I added this to the topic you suggested. 76.91.20.118 (talk) 07:05, 2 August 2013 (UTC)

Portal updated, which was reverted

This portal was updated and expanded, which was subsequently reverted by another user in the following edit: diff. The improvements included:

  • Overhauled portal with modernized wiki markup using transclusion from articles to display content, which provides readers with current, up-to-date information.
  • Article content from various portal subpages was moved directly into the portal using transclusions.
  • New FA-class and GA-class articles were added to the Selected biography section of the portal.
  • Additional updates, cleanup and layout changes had been performed.
  • The articles added to the Selected biography section can be readily viewed in this version of the portal, and then selecting the Edit link (here). Then scroll down.
  • Additional articles for the portal can be considered from those available in the table listed below. North America1000 09:48, 13 October 2019 (UTC)
