History
editEarly years (2010–2013)
editThe members of Joywave all grew up in Rochester, New York.[3][4] Armbruster, Brenner, and Morinelli played together in various local bands growing up, including The Hoodies.[5][3] Joywave was officially formed in 2010.[5][6] Donnelly joined the band soon after, and they released their first mixtape, 77777, in 2011.[6] In 2012, they released their first EP, Koda Vista.[3] In 2013, they released their second mixtape, 88888.[7]
"Dangerous" and How Do You Feel Now? (2014–2016)
editOriginally a member of Big Data with Alan Wilkis, Armbruster wrote the song "Dangerous", which was recorded by Wilkis with Armbruster on vocals, and credited to Big Data featuring Joywave. Following the success of "Dangerous", the band was signed to the Disney-owned label Hollywood Records, where they obtained unique permission to use samples from Disney's movie catalog.[8] Joywave's notability continued to rise with the release of their 2014 EP How Do You Feel? The two singles from the EP, "Tongues" (ft. KOPPS) and "Somebody New", achieved considerable popularity on the radio and on YouTube, with the respective music videos each having over 1.8 million views on YouTube as of June 2017.[9][10] "Tongues" was featured on a Google Nexus commercial and in EA Sports football game, FIFA 15,[3] and the music video for the song was directed by the directing duo Daniels.[11]
Joywave's debut LP, How Do You Feel Now?, was released on April 21, 2015 in the US and June 22, 2015 in the UK.[12] It reached #25 on the Billboard Alternative Albums chart, #34 on the Top Rock Albums chart, and #3 on the Heatseekers Albums chart.[13] In 2016, the band released Swish, which features alternate versions of "Destruction". The title is a reference to Kanye West's 2016 album The Life of Pablo, which was originally going to be titled Swish.[14]
Content (2017–2018)
editIn April 2017, they released "Content",[15] the first single off their upcoming second album, also titled Content.[16] In May 2017, they released the album's second single, "It's a Trip!".[16] Three other singles were released in the months that followed: "Shutdown," "Doubt," and "Going to a Place." Content was released on July 28, 2017.[17] On June 1, 2018, the band released the song "Compromise", an unreleased song from the How Do You Feel Now? era.[18]
Possession (2018–2020)
editOn July 12, 2018, the band released the single "Blastoffff".[19] It appears in the Fortnite Season 5 trailer.[20] On June 21, 2019 the single "Like a Kennedy" was released alongside a teaser for the music video.[citation needed] On August 9, 2019, the band released the single "Obsession", in advance of their third album.[21] On November 1, 2019, they released the single "Blank Slate". On January 7, 2020, the band released the song "Half Your Age" and revealed that their third album, Possession, would be released on March 13. Cleanse (2021–2024)
editThe single "After Coffee" was released March 19, 2021, followed by the single "Every Window Is A Mirror" on May 7, 2021, in advance of their upcoming EP also titled Every Window Is A Mirror. The EP was released on June 25, 2021, and included the previous two singles plus two new songs: "Pray For The Reboot" and "The Inversion".[23]
On October 29, 2021, the band released the single "Cyn City 2000" and announced the release date of their fourth album, Cleanse, as well as a headlining tour. A fourth single "Buy American" was released January 14, 2022. The album was released on February 11, 2022.[23]
After touring with the band Sir Sly in 2018, Armbruster formed the group Best Frenz with Sir Sly musician Jason Suwito. The duo released the EP 30% Off in 2021 and the LP The Mall in 2023.[24]
In 2022, the band recorded a version of the NHL on ESPN theme for playoff broadcasts.[25]
On June 24, 2022, the band announced a live album titled Live.[26] The album was recorded from multiple shows on the Cleanse Tour and released on July 29, 2022.[27]

For the past year or so, our beloved Benjamin Bailey aka @jacobashermusic has been hard at work on his solo project. His debut EP arrives August 11th (It is excellent!), but it means he will be transitioning away from his role in Joywave. You may still see him on stage with us in the coming months (He's a sport and is not leaving us high and dry), but do not be alarmed if you start to see photos with three people in them on this page. I would encourage you to hit the follow button over on the @jacobashermusic page to keep up with all of Ben's latest happenings (We'll continue to share them here as well). We will miss his contagious laughter on the bus, on stage, and in every green room. Venue juice machines may greet today's news with a sigh of relief, but I have no doubt Jacob Asher will return to make them weep in no time. Love from all of us ❤️"".
