This stone image is not authentic. It was placed on the Marae as a movie prop. A close look at its hairline will show resemblance to the wigs used by officers of European vessels in the 18th & 19th centuries.

The intent is show the newcomers as Gods.

It used to reside on the altar (in the center of the upright stones on the far side of the site), and has been moved appropriately enough off the Marae itself.

Since it is a part of the Marae's history (albeit contemporary and Hollywood), it would make more sense to have it removed from the greater Marae grounds altogether, and placed in the visitor center across the street.

Taputapuatea is a sacred site, and not a place for movie props.

Support should be given to Association Na Papa E Va'u Raiatea, who has dedicated itself to the stewardship of this Marae.
