English: White Heron Sanctuary Tours, based in Whataroa, West Coast, New Zealand, is the only company with a permit to take tourists to the white heron / kōtuku (Ardea alba modesta) nesting site in the Waitangiroto Nature Reserve (often incorrectly called the "Okarito" white heron colony). The company was founded in 1987 by the sixth-generation Arnold family from Whataroa. During the breeding season of mid-September to February visitors take a minibus to the edge of the reserve and walk through native bush to a hide from which they can observe the colony.
