Summary

Description

The Collings Foundation owns and flies two World War II heavy bombers, a B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator. These aircraft tour the country, and the public can walk through them and even take short flights. The B-17 was older, smaller, and slower, but it was the better known, both during the war and afterward. On the other hand, it was easier to fly and more resistant to battle damage. More than 12,000 B-17s were built during World War II, and 18,000 B-24s.

I went to Manassas in response to a newspaper request for volunteers. Weather was bad, and they did not open for business, but I got a look inside the B-17. The Collings Foundation still tours the country with these aircraft, plus a P-51 Mustang fighter.
