Date = Before 1945 Author = unknown
Soviet government employee: Hand-tinted WW2 promotional photograph of Georgy Vinogradov (1908-1980), wartime radio singer on Soviet All-Union Radio and soloist with the Alexandrov Ensemble 1943-51. Both aspects of his career (Soviet Radio and army Ensemble) were in response to a Soviet government directive to keep up the morale of the people during WW2 through Russian and Soviet music. The photo was taken before 1951 when a bar-room brawl apparently offended the Soviet government, and his career ended.
The licence: The Russian licence is placed here on the understanding that the Soviet military and Soviet All-Union Radio were state government agencies and that their promotional photograph of one of their WW2 army entertainment corps (i.e. this image) is a state agency document.
Lack of military uniform: Vinogradov is quoted as saying that he wore army uniform for the first few months after he joined in 1943, but not thereafter. Apart from taking part in the troops entertainment corps during WW2, he never performed in public, and it has been suggested that his appearance may have precluded this - and this suggestion (if valid) may partly explain the lack of uniform and the overpainted quality of the photograph. See his page Georgi Pavlovich Vinogradov for the relevant details and references.

Purpose of use |
It is important in relevant articles to be able to identify this highly-successful soloist of the Alexandrov Ensemble (Red Army Choir), who was world-famous as a representative of Soviet music, and who was employed by Stalin to use his position for national propaganda purposes via music only. While a member of the Alexandrov Ensemble, he was also a major radio singer who produced hundreds of popular 78rpm recordings. |
