English: Toyota Corolla E20 at Classic Car Show Knebworth.
English wikipedia indicates (in August 2010) that "production of most models" stopped in 1974 but this model continued to be marketed after its successor had been introduced, in some markets until 1978. The paradox is not one on which the manufacturer's marketing department will be likely to shed much light, but the rapid rise in world oil prices of 1973 and the ensuing world-wide economic crisis left many auto-makers with large stocks of new cars for which no buyers, in the shorter term, could be found. In these circumstances it is likely that many of the wiser auto-makers will have stored their stocks of unused new cars for however long it took, judiciously continuing to sell them as new cars from the (in more critical markets already replaced) older range even though they had been stored unused for some time.
