DescriptionSanchi King Ashoka with his Queens, South Gate, Stupa no. 1.jpg
English: Ashoka with his Queens, South Gate, Stupa no. 1, Sanchi, photograph by Anandajoti Bhikkhu. Ashoka is in grief as he saw the pipal tree of the Buddha being neglected by Queen Tishyarakshita. He is so shocked that he has to be supported by his two wives. He would thereafter build a temple around the tree, seen in the panel above, and which would become the sacred site of Bodhgaya. Interpretation in "Ashoka in Ancient India", by Nayanjot Lahiri, Harvard University Press, 2015 p.296 . A similar relief appears at Stupa No2, but in a poor state of preservation: .
