Summary

Description
English: The Auld Brig dates from the 16th century, but is known locally as the 'Roman Bridge', because the Romans are known to have bridged the Esk at this spot. Many an English and Scottish army has crossed the bridge in its time. After the Battle of Pinkie in 1547, the routed Scottish army came under fire on the bridge from English ships at the mouth of the Esk and in 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobites crossed it on their way to and from the Battle of Prestonpans. This is the view looking northwards towards the river mouth.
