English: Newport (Yorks.) Locomotive Depot.
View westward in Locomotive Yard, towards the Shed, on a Sunday when most of its engines were resting - and a group of us visiting Enthusiasts chat together. The Depot adjoining the great Newport Marshalling Yard, one of the largest and busiest handling the massive outpiut of the Tees-side steelworks. In 1954 Newport (code 51B, Darlington District) the allocation comprised:- 32 2-8-0s and 7 0-6-0Ts (both all ex-War Department), 14 0-8-0s, 30 0-6-0s (nearly all Class J26, as seen in the photograph) and 8 4-8-0Ts. This Depot was closed on 1/6/58 along with Middlesbrough, when the locomotives from both Depots were congregated at the new Thornaby Depot - which in turn closed to steam in 12/64.
