Summary
DescriptionNewZionBaptistChurchPittsburgh.jpg |
English: Picture of the New Zion Baptist Church (formerly Union Methodist Church), located at 1304 Manhattan Street in the Manchester neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on October 9, 2010. Built in 1867, architects Barr & Moser, the church is on the List of Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmarks.
On page 141 in James D. Van Trump and Arthur P. Ziegler, Jr.'s book Landmark Architecture of Allegheny County (1967, Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, LCCN) it describes the architectural style as "Vernacular Classical", and says, "The Union Methodist congregation was formed in 1846 and the present church was built after the design of Barr and Moser, one of the leading Pittsburgh architectural firms of the mid-nineteenth century. This is an interesting mid-Victorian city church having its brick walls adorned with blind arcading and it is related stylistically to the old North Side Market House and the Allegheny City Hall. In 1961 the building was bought by the New Zion Baptist Church." |
