NTPermissions.png (409 × 486 pixels, file size: 38 KB, MIME type: image/png)
This non-free media file has been set up with as small a version as possible, to comply with Wikipedia's non-free content policy and United States copyright law. The current resolution has been manually selected to achieve as small an image as possible without destroying the image content. According to Wikipedia's policy for non-free content, the amount of non-free work should be as little as possible. In particular, non-free media on Wikipedia should not be usable as substitutes for the original work. |
Summary
editThis software is copyrighted, but its screenshot is being used here under U.S. fair use laws, because:
- it helps to visually identify a specific visual component of the software; without visual identification, the effect is impossible to be communicated. In that sense it furthers the goal of providing verifiable information.
- it does not limit, nor does it claim to, limit the rights of the copyright holder.
- it does not, in any way, assist in illegal reproduction of the software or any other things covered by the license of the software.
- it is being used for informational purposes.
- it is copyrighted, so free equivalent cannot exist.
The rationale applies to the usage in NTFS as a method of illustrating the ACLs used by NTFS for Windows NT permissions, adjacent to the text. By definition, there is no free replacement for its use here.

Aside from the claim that this file qualifies for use without permission under fair use, this file is also available under a license that permits unrestricted redistribution in unaltered form but forbids derivative works. This tag must only be used with a non-free license tag and a valid fair use rationale as required by policy. |
