Description

Monument to Sir Michael Stanhope (1545-1621), MP, of Sudbourne Hall, Suffolk, in All Saints' Church, Sudbourne. One of his four daughters and co-heiresses was Jane Stanhope, who married (1) Henry Radclyffe, a son of Robert Radclyffe, 5th Earl of Sussex, (2) Sir William Withipole. She inherited the manor of Sudbourne, which descended via her daughter by her second husband Sir William Withipole. The arms of Radcliffe impaling Stanhope are shown on the monument.

Inscription

Heere resteth in assured hope to rise in Christ, Sir Michaell Stanhope knight, who served at the feet of Queen Elizabeth of most happy and famous memory in her privy Chamber, twenty years, And of our Soveraigne king James in the same place the rest of his daies; who maryed Anne daughter to Sir William Reade of Osterly in the County of Middlesex knight, by whom he had issue two daughters; Jane maryed to Henry Viscount fitz Walter, son and heire apparent to the Earle of Sussex; And Elizabeth maryed to George lord Berkeley, Mowbray, Seagrave, and Breouse, of Berkeley Castle in the County of Glouc., this George being the 21st Baron by discent.
