English: This true-color image of Super Typhoon Meranti, locally known in the Philippines as "Ferdie," was captured during the evening hours on September 13, 2016, at 4:00 P.M. PST (08:00 UTC), by the Advanced Himwari Imager (AHI) instrument flying aboard JMA's Himawari 8 satellite. Meranti was an extremely powerful tropical cyclone that originated from a tropical disturbance near Guam in September 2016 during the 2016 Pacific typhoon season. At the time this was captured, Meranti was near its peak intensity, moving toward Taiwan with winds of 130 mph (210 km/h) (115 knots) on the 10-min Japan Meteorological Agency typhoon scale, making it a "Violent Typhoon" on that scale and according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center it had winds of 190 mph (310 km/h) (165 knots) on the 1-min SSHWS making it equivalent to a Category 5 Major hurricane on that scale, the estimated minimum central pressure at the time was at or around 896 mbar (26.5 inHg).
