The mass-hacking attempts came in four waves, with around 15,000 attempted account break-ins per hour in the first wave, and at least 11,400 attempted break-ins per hour in the second wave. On May 6, there was a much smaller attack, before the mass account-breaking attacks resumed on May 7. In the fourth and final wave of attacks, there were around 10,500 account-breaking attempts per hour from May 7 to 8. Over 642,000 accounts may have experienced at least one hacking attempt. At the time, this was the largest account-breaking cyberattack that Wikimedia had experienced. In July 2018–March 2019, a much larger cyberattack followed, which targeted mostly administrator accounts.
