On May 21 1930, former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser was born in Toorak, Victoria, Australia. After completing a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Magdalen College, Oxford in 1952, he entered politics as the MP for Wannon in 1955. He was the 22nd Prime Minister of Australia and the leader of the Australian Liberal Party from 1975 to 1983. On 20 March 2015, Fraser died at the age of 84 after a brief illness.
The image shown here is of Malcolm Fraser and the New Zealand Prime Minister Robert Muldoon, meeting in 1978 for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Regional Meeting in Sydney. This event was overshadowed by a bomb at the Sydney Hilton hotel which resulted in the deaths of 3 people.
This image is from the papers of Robert Muldoon which were transferred to Archives New Zealand by Lady Thea Muldoon after Robert’s death.
