The Independent Cup was donated in 1921 by Independent Newspapers Ltd as a perpetual challenge trophy for the winner (men) of the annual Liffey Swim over a 1.25 mile course. The exact inscription on the front of the cup is "Challenge Cup for Annual Liffey Race (Inaugurated 1920) Presented to the Leinster Branch Irish Amateur Swimming Association by the Irish Independent". The names of all male winners, including that of the inaugural winner J.J. Kennedy in 1920, are engraved on the Cup up to 2004, and now on the base of the trophy since 2005. The trophy was made by Hopkins & Hopkins, Silversmiths, O'Connell Street Bridge, Dublin (Maker mark: H&H) and bears the Dublin Assay Office hallmarks and date letter for 1921 (Britannia, Harp with Crown, Letter F). Hopkins & Hopkins are famous for making the original Sam Maguire Cup, the GAA All Ireland Football Trophy. The initial value of the Irish Independent Cup was 50 guineas. In addition to holding the Challenge Cup for a year, the winner was presented with a solid gold medal.
