Kinnari, this instrument finds mention in 13th century epic "Sangeeta Ratnakara" written by Srangadeva. According to Hindu mythology, it was invented by Kinnara, one of the musicians of "Heaven" and love. There is hardly a single Sanskrit treatise that does not make mention of this instrument. The kinnari is in common use amoung the peasants and working class of Mysore and South Karnataka. This instrument us said to the be precursor of Veena too. In the tall stone column in front of the Basavangudi Temple in Bangalore, an image of a person playing the kinnari is seen. Origin: about 1000 years ago. Material: Wood, Bottle gourd. Type: String. |
