Text Appearing Before Image: worked out its designs with such wonderful skill andpatient elaboration on the pages of the Gospels and Psalters, andtransferred them subsequently to the metal-work and stone-work of theperiod intervening between the age of the best manuscripts and thetwelfth century. This cross is supposed to have been erected to the memory of Colin,a prior, who died in 1510; as it bears the inscription, IIcbc est CruxColini Filii Cristi. On the socket-stone there is a much-worn inscrip-tion which it is impossible to decipher. Cross No 2.—Standing in a pile of masonry at the north-east of thel)riory buildings is the lo vrer stone of the shaft of another cross, 3 feet3 inches high, one of its faces worn smooth, the other covered withintertwining scrollwork of stems, terminating in broad-leaved foliage.This stone is surmounted by a disc which did not belong to it originally,judging from the character of its sculpturing (we are informed that ^ Scotland in Early Christian Times, Second Series, p. 130.
