English: John Hope (1765 - 1823), the fourth Earl of Hopetoun, was a military man, attaining the rank of general, who served in the Napoleonic Wars, mostly in the Mediterranean and the Peninsular Campaign. He was quite a brave man and was highly commended by Wellington, who said, " he was the ablest man in the Peninsular army."
