English: Abandoned whaling ships Hvalur 6 RE-376 (115) and Hvalur 7 RE-377 (116) beached in Helguvík, a bay near the head of the Hvalfjörður ('Whale Fjord') in western Iceland (municipality Hvalfjarðarsveit). In November 1986, both ships were sunk in Reykjavík harbour by anti-whaling activists from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Both ships were raised a few days later, but they have never been repaired and have never gone whaling again. As of 2015, they are 'stored' here, next to Hvalur hf's whaling station. Hvalur hf is the only Icelandic commercial whale hunting company (as of 2023).
Nederlands: Verlaten walvisjagers Hvalur 6 RE-376 (115) en Hvalur 7 RE-377 (116) op de kust in Helguvík, een baai nabij de kop van de Hvalfjörður ('Walvisfjord') in het westen van IJsland (gemeente Hvalfjarðarsveit). In november 1986 werden beide schepen in de haven van Reykjavík tot zinken gebracht door anti-walvisjachtactivisten van de Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Beide schepen werden een paar dagen later geborgen, maar werden nooit meer gerepareerd of gebruikt voor de walvisjacht. Sinds 2015 worden ze hier 'opgeslagen', naast het walvisstation van Hvalur hf. Hvalur hf is het enige IJslandse commerciële walvisjachtbedrijf (in 2023). |
