STORIES OF THE CHAPAPOTE

•Documentary 2003 •Dir. Stéphane M. Grueso •Prod. Stéphane M. Grueso •Backpackvideo Films •1 x 35' / color / stereo •DVCAM

The spill from the Prestige, the oil tanker which broke up and sank off the coast of Galicia, caused the biggest environmental disaster in Spain's history. Tones and tones of oil kept arriving at the coast. With the authorities failing to act or overtaken by events, ordinary citizens organized themselves and set off for Galicia to help clean up the fuel oil. Thus was the figure of the volunteer born in Spain. This documentary records the experiences of a group of 50 volunteers organized by the University of Seville who went to Galicia to combat the catastrophe. It follows them for six days and they tell us about their experiences. This documentary sets out to discover and understand what motivates a group of people to carry out such a novel act of solidarity, something practically unheard of nowadays.
