Mauna Kea is a sacred mountain and is the highest island mountain in the world at an altitude of about 13800 feet. When measure from its base at the bottom of the sea, it stands at 33000 feet as the highest mountain in the world. The atmosphere above the peak is ideal for astronomy and some of the biggest telescopes in the world are located at the peak including the twin Keck telescopes, Subaru telescope and NASA infrared telescope. The temperature at the peak stays around freezing and there is a glacial lake close by. Any one can drive to the top using a 4x4 vehicle that you can rent from Harper Auto Rental.
