Summary

Description Woodcut of Hammond typewriter from 1890s, invented by American journalist James Bartlett Hammond in the 1870s and manufactured commercially starting in 1881-1884. This drawing is probably the Hammond No. 2, introduced around 1885. The ad copy in the drawing shows that it was from an advertisement. From the source p.881: 'It has 30 keys and two shifts...yielding 90 characters. The type are arranged on two type wheels, which together form the quadrant of a circle. The type wheels are arranged on a shaft which stands perpendicularly in the center of the disk...". The type wheels could be changed, allowing the machine to type in different fonts and languages. Instead of the type striking the ink ribbon against the paper, a hammer behind the page struck a rubber strip, driving the paper against the ribbon and type wheel. For more information see Hammond, Portable Typewriter website Alterations: Removed caption. Removed yellow discoloration from R edge of image.
