Summary

Description
English: Twenty-five years ago, the Atlantic was beset with another series of Cape Verde hurricanes. The most famous of which, Hurricane Gloria, impacted the Northeast, making landfall three times (along the Outer Banks, Long Island, and Connecticut) before diminishing over New England. Gloria reached Category 4 intensity early in its life, then skirted the coastline of the U.S. It is still the strongest hurricane to strike so far north, and since Gloria only one other storm has made landfall in the Northeast (Bob in 1991). This image, from the GOES-6 satellite shows Hurricane Gloria on September 27, 1985 at 8570z, as its eye wall is impacting the New Jersey coastline.
