File:Gilbert and Ivanhoe.png

Original file (2,236 × 2,918 pixels, file size: 1.48 MB, MIME type: image/png)

Description W. S. Gilbert and Richard D'Oyly Carte, after Richard D'Oyly Carte built an opera house to host Sullivan's one grand opera, Ivanhoe, and the Gilbert and Sullivan partnership had temporarily broken up. The exact date of the cartoon (the annual does not give it) would somewhat change its meaning: Ivanhoe was a success, but D'Oyly Carte had nothing to go on after it, and so the opera house had to close, and would eventually fail.
Date Nominally 1892, reality must be sometime in 1891
