English: An old label on the reverse of the painting identifies the sitter as George James Bruere. The portrait was sold at Christie's, King Street, London, on 25 November 2003 (Sale no. 6829) as "Portrait of a gentleman, traditionally identified as George Bruere, Governor of Bermuda, three-quarter-length, seated in a blue coat and yellow waistcoat".
