English: The structure of a protein-coding gene. Regulatory sequence (yellow) determines where and when the protein coding region (red) will be expressed. The gene is transcribed into a pre-mRNA which is spliced to remove introns and generate a mature mRNA. 5' and 3' untranslated regions of the mRNA (blue) direct which portions should be translated into the final protein product.
