DescriptionFormer Payne Avenue High School, North Tonawanda, New York - 20211123.jpg
English: The former Payne Avenue High School at 621 Payne Avenue, North Tonawanda, New York, as seen in November 2021. Designed by the well-known firm of Tooker & Marsh and built between 1926 and 1928, this is an outstanding (not to mention monumentally scaled) example of early 20th century school architecture, grafting a Baroque-influenced High Georgian Revival aesthetic (exemplified here, inter alia, by the Palladian window and broken pediment with urn relief that consecutively top the main entrance, as well as the Corinthian pilaster strips and engaged pediments that feature on the façades of the lateral pavilions) onto a standardized structure whose efficiency and scale are emblematic of the era. The building served as high school for North Tonawanda's public school district until 1962, then subsequently as a junior high or middle school until 2004. It's now vacant, but its nearly intact physical condition and its successful 2019 nomination to the National Register of Historic Places may well serve to incentivize reuse.
