User comments | Donggwanwangmyo, in east of Seoul, is an ancestral shrine where ancestral sacrifices to the Chinese commander Guan Yu (162-219) were performed, built in 1601 at the request of the Ming Dynasty
During the Ming Dynasty, the Chinese people worshiped Guan Yu and built many shrines called Mumyo to perform ancestral sacrifices in his honor, just like shrines called Munmyo to make sacrifices to Confucius. A statue of Guan Yu is kept at Dongmyo. Donggwanwangmyo is composed of two main buildings attached to each other front and rear, an arrangement that can be found frequently at temples or shrines in China. The interior is also divided into front and rear sections. The front part is a " front room" and was used for sacrificial rites, and the rear part is a "main room", which houses the statues of Guan Yu and his subordinates. Donggwanwangmyo has important historical value as a 17th century ritual facility that shows Chinese-style architectural characteristics in terms of its wide brick walls, unique roof shapes, statues, interior composition, decorations. etc. |
