Donatiello I (Do I) was found on 23 September 2016 in a deep wide field amateur image of the Andromeda galaxy region obtained from the composition of a set of images taken during several years with a refractor ED127mm by the italian amateur astronomer Giuseppe Donatiello. The main purpose of this wide-field mosaic of the area between M31 and M33 was to detect the stellar streams and M31 satellites previously reported in the PAndAs. The detection was confirmed by a visual inspection of the SDSS DR9 images and follow-up observations using the professional facilities TNG and GTC (La Palma, Spain).
