Summary

Description
English: A mobile ICBM carried aboard a truck in the Red Square May Day Military Parade 1964. This missile (Soviet designation R-26) was initially classified as a SS-8 Sasin. However it was later discovered to be an altogether different missile from the SS-8 (Soviet designation: R-9 Desna). The mistaken NATO designation of SS-8 Sasin was never changed, and subsequently caused some confusion amongst Soviet-watchers.

This photograph of a declassified UK Ministry of Defence dyeline print published in DEFE 44/158 available to view in The National Archives, Kew, London. The image has been stitched together from four segments and retouched merely to straighten it up and remove the distortion created by the camera lens. Shooting as four segments was necessary because of the very large drawing size and the limited space and facilities available.

The drawing was created by UK Ministry of Defence draughtsman H.M.Scott based on intelligence, personal observation by Allied embassy military attachés, and photographs taken of equipment seen in a Moscow Red Square May Day Military Parade 1964, and possibly other intelligence sources.
