Deutsch: Das heutige Stadtwappen zeigt, dass Stollberg zu den ältesten Stadtsiedlungen Sachsens gehört. In "J. Siebmacher's grosses und allgemeines Wappenbuch" (Verlag Bauer & Raspe, 1885, Nürnberg) heißt es: "Stollberg, Stadt im Königreich Sachsen, Sitz einer Dynastischen Familie gleichen Namens im 13. Jahrhundert, dann den Schönburgern gehörig und durch Verplünderung im 15. Jahrhundert an Kursachsen gelangt, führt getheiltes Schild, oben eine weisse Kirche mit rotem Dache in Gelb, unten in Rot ein blauer Pfahl mit einer gelben Krone belegt."

Die drei Dörfer, die Stollberg vorangingen, gehörten zur Herrschaft Stollberg, die von den Herren von Schönburg als Reichslehen regiert wurde. Sie wurde 1367 an das Königreich Böhmen verkauft, 1422 von der Markgrafschaft Meißen erworben und 1459 vom Kurfürstentum Sachsen übernommen, wobei sie weiterhin ein böhmisches Lehen blieb. 1473 wurde sie von den Herren von Schönburg zurückgewonnen. 1564 erlangten die sächsischen Kurfürsten aus dem Geschlecht der Wettiner die vollständige Kontrolle. Stollberg erhielt 1343 das Stadtrecht.

Das Wappen basiert auf einem Stadtsiegel aus dem 13. Jahrhundert, das im Wesentlichen das gleiche Muster zeigte. Die Kirche, die zumindest bis 1989 vollständig rot war, gilt als Darstellung der örtlichen Pfarrkirche, die der Heiligen Maria geweiht ist. Die Krone und die Tinkturen Rot und Blau im unteren Teil beziehen sich ebenfalls auf sie als Himmelskönigin.
English: The three villages, predeceding Stollberg belonged to the Lordship of Stollberg, ruled by the Lords of Schönburg, as an imperial fiefdom. It was sold to the Kingdom of Böhmen in 1367, acquired by the Margraviate of Meißen 1422, by the Electorate of Sachsen in 1459, still being a Bohemian fiefdom. It was regained by the Lords of Schönburg in 1473. In 1564 the Saxonian electors from the Wettin kin gained complete control. Stollberg gained city rights in 1343. The arms are based on a city seal from the 13th century, which basically displayed the same pattern. The church, completely red at least until 1989, is considered to be a representation of the local parish church dedicated to St. Mary. Coronet and the tinctures red and blue in base are also referring to her as Celestial Queen.
