Deutsch: Das 1905 verliehene Wappen ist abgeleitet von einem Siegel aus dem späten 15. Jahrhundert. Der Löwe bezieht sich auf die frühere Herrschaft der Herzöge von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel. Das Schiff (niederdeutsch: Schöpp) steht redend für den Ortsnamen und weißt ferner auf die früher schiffbare Altenau hin, an der die Stadt liegt. |
