English: This image shows examples of petrified wood from the Shinarump Formation at the Nacimiento Mine, near Cuba, New Mexico, USA. The brown wood at right shows conventional silica permineralization. The black wood at left shows unusual permineralization with chalcocite and other sulfide minerals. Some of these have oxidized to produce the blue-green stain, mostly colloidal malachite and azurite. The copper permineralized petrified wood here was mined at one time for its copper content.
