Title
Bellyband with RFID chip developed by Shima Seiki Haute Technology Laboratory
Description
English: Bellyband with RFID chip developed by Shima Seiki Haute Technology Laboratory of Drexel University, displayed on mannequin as part of the museum exhibition Second Skin: The Science of Stretch at the Chemical Heritage Foundation, on view from November 4, 2016 to May 13, 2017.

The bellyband is designed to monitor uterine contractions and potentially fetal heartbeat. It is intended to be worn by women who are in labor or who are experiencing a difficult pregnancy.

Conductive threads in the knitted fabric function as an antenna and send signals to an embedded RFID (radio frequency identification device) that reports the data. This type of sensing technology may have further applications.
