Summary

Description

c/n B21128 Built 1995 This French-built microlight was used by ‘Operation Migration’ in Canada, which teaches captive-reared Whooping Cranes to migrate. The cranes, Americas tallest bird and an endangered species, are led along a 1,200mile migration route through Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida. Other species led include Canada Geese in 1995, Trumpeter Swans in 1996 and Sandhill Cranes in 1997, 1998 and 2000. The first Whooping Cranes made the journey unassisted in 2006, the first time this had taken place for over 100 years. This aircraft is also a film star, having appeared in the 1996 movie “Fly Away Home”. It was donated to the Smithsonian Institute by Operation Migration in 2006 and is seen on display at the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum.
