Summary

Description
English: The October 2014 close-approach of comet Siding Spring (C/2013 A1) to scale with Mars and Phobos & Deimos. The grey area is defined by the inner and outer limits of the comet's closest approach, and the slightly brighter line is the nominal close-approach distance as of August 6th, 2014.

As the two satellites of Mars are each only several kilometers in diameter, they are too small to be seen in detail on this diagram, and as a result are single points of light. The relative locations of the Martian satellites, size and direction of the tail of C/2013 A1, and appearance of Mars are NOT to scale.

A pixel represents 100 kilometers (62 miles).
