Cervus canadensis (Erxleben, 1777) - male North American elk in Colorado, USA (boreal summer 2009).
In the summertime, male elk (bulls) herd together while grazing in the mountains. They average about 700 pounds in size, and may reach 1,000 pounds. Elk horns may have a span up to 5 feet long.
