• English: A wooden tower on a moat or mound was the first keep to be built at Dunboyne (1251). After this, De Clare built a stone castle (1277) and De Rokeby a castle (1353). It was the O'Briens (1425) who built the castle that is there now, and they made many changes over the 400 years that it was theirs. When it was being renovated (1956/58) a later amendment from 1619 was dispatched (the date of the ornate ceilings of the church) and the 15th century crenelations were reconstructed. A siege took place in 1646 on Admiral Penn, and it is though that his son, William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, was in the castle at the time. National Monument 478
