Description
Painting of Beresteyn-van der Eem family, originally in the possession of the Hofje Codde en van Beresteyn. Sold in 1885 (after hanging for 200 years in the Hofje) to the Louvre as a Frans Hals painting. Painting is typical of other period family portraits from Holland, with an attachment on the right for a child born later, but also showing the children from the first marriage of Paulus van Beresteyn as well as Nicolaes and Emerentia, the children of Catharina van der Eem. The painting has been restored and painted over several times. It is probably by Pieter Claesz Soutman, who was a regent of the Hofje, and not Frans Hals.
