Muslin, trimmed with satin and embroidered with colourful wool

In the 18th century most women had coloured wedding dresses which they continued to wear for special occasions long after the event. In the 1790s muslin became fashionable. Because muslin was easier to wash than silk, white became a practical option and women began to wear it for their marriages. This dress was probably made for a wedding as it is so rich in detail and trimmings.
