Counties of Denmark (Danish, amt; plural, amter) were a administrative country subdivisions, which contained one or more municipalities (kommuner).
On January 1, 2007, the Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007) abolished the last 13 counties and instead created five administrative regions to replace them. At the same time smaller municipalities were merged into larger units, cutting the number of municipalities from 270 to 98.
