The depiction of LGBT characters in animated series in the 2020s changed from the 2010s, accelerating, especially when it came to Western animation. In Western animation this included series such as The Owl House (2020–2023),[1] Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts (2020),[2] Helluva Boss (2020–present),[3] Star Trek: Lower Decks (2020–present),[4] Adventure Time: Distant Lands (2020–2021),[5] High Guardian Spice (2021),[6] Dead End: Paranormal Park (2022),[7] and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off (2023).[8] In anime, LGBTQ characters appeared in various productions, including Adachi and Shimamura (2020),[9] Otherside Picnic (2021),[10] I'm in Love with the Villainess (2023),[11] Whisper Me a Love Song (2024–present),[12] The Executioner and Her Way of Life (2022),[13] Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (2022–2023),[14] The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady (2023),[15] and Cherry Magic! This list only includes recurring characters, otherwise known as supporting characters, which appear frequently from time to time during the series' run, often playing major roles in more than one episode, and those in the main cast are listed below.
